About
Prof. Dato’ Dr. Ahamed Kameel Mydin Meera is Deputy Vice Chancellor (Academic & Research) at the University Sultan Azlan Shah in Kuala Kangsar, Perak, and is known for his writing on money and payment systems, and on the gold-backing of currencies.
Background
He holds a Ph.D. in Finance, magna cum laude, from the University of North Texas, awarded in 1996. His Bachelor’s and Master’s degrees, both in Economics, are from the International Islamic University Malaysia.
His areas of interest and expertise include finance, Islamic banking, financial markets, investment analysis, macroeconomics, the economics of social issues, and quantitative methods, with extensive experience in teaching, training, consulting and research across those fields.
Monetary reform
He is the founding Chairman of the Movement for Monetary Justice Malaysia, which works for monetary reform in Malaysia and elsewhere in the interest of inclusiveness, fairness, stability and sustainable socio-economic development.
He is also co-founder of Waqafa International Sdn. Bhd., dedicated to promoting the Ubaid Waqf Economy Model, a way of using waqf to empower businesses and individuals. He holds that this model offers Muslims a path to the Islamic economic and financial system sought since the Islamic revival of the late 1960s.
Previously
At the International Islamic University Malaysia he served as Dean of the Centre for Postgraduate Studies and as Dean of the Institute of Islamic Banking and Finance. His papers carry affiliations with the Department of Business Administration and the Department of Economics in the Kulliyyah of Economics and Management Sciences, and with the IIUM Institute of Islamic Banking and Finance.
